Position-specific expression of homeoprotein gradients in different feather tracts.

چکیده
Homeoproteins have been shown to be expressed in defined bands along the anteriorposterior (A-P) body axis and are involved in determining the patterns of insect appendages.' In vertebrates, homeoproteins are also expressed in anterior-posterior (A-P) gradient in the spinal cord. Recently, homeoproteins were also shown to be distributed in a gradient in developing limb buds2.3 and feather buds: thus suggesting that homeoproteins may be involved in setting up the A-P axes of cell fields at different levels, first for the body axis, then for the limb axis, and finally for the feather a x k 4 Here, we further examine the orientation of the homeoprotein gradient at the level of the feather tract using the procedure of Chuong et aL4 We found that there are different but definite gradient axes in different tracts. Thus there is a position-specific homeoprotein expression pattern in each feather bud. Together with previous findings: the observations are summarized as follows.

Gradients of homeoproteins in developing feather buds.
Homeoproteins are functionally involved in pattern formation. Recently, homeoproteins have been shown to be distributed in a graded fashion in developing limb buds. Here we examine the expression of homeoproteins in chicken feather development by immunocytochemical localization. We find that XlHbox 1 antigen is present in cell nuclei and is distributed in a gradient in the mesoderm of developin...

Morphogens are molecules inducing morphogenetic responses from cells and cell ensembles. The concept of morphogen is related to that of positional value, as the generation of morphological and physiological characteristics is function of position. Based on the observation that homeoproteins, a category of transcription factors with morphogenetic functions, traffic between abutting cells and, ve...
متن کاملBMPs induce dermal markers and ectopic feather tracts
Bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling is known to be involved in multiple inductive events during embryogenesis including the development of amniote skin. Here, we demonstrate that early application of BMP-2 to the lateral trunk of chick embryos induces the formation of dense dermis, which is competent to participate in feather development. We show that BMPs induce the dermis markers Msx-1...
متن کاملFeather Pecking of Laying Hens in Different Stocking Density and Type of Cage
Both stocking rate and housing systems are main factors influencing the occurrence of feather pecking in laying hens raised in conventional cage system. This study examines the effects of different type of cage and stock density on feather pecking behaviour in hens. Total of 216 Hisex Brown hens at 16 weeks of age were randomly selected and put into 2 types of battery cages: conventional cages ...
متن کاملFeather formations
The individual feathers in the skin of a developing chicken embryo are arranged in a precise array within a series of so-called 'tracts'. The images above show nascent feather buds in the legs of embryos at 8–9 days of incubation. Buds are added sequentially across the forming feather tract, as shown by the range of developmental stages in the image at top left. (In all three upper images, buds...
